What’s so special about BLU-RAY Discs ?

What is a Blu-ray disc?
Blu-ray also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a new optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world’s leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson)

It should be noted that it is not Blue-Ray it is Blu-Ray.

This was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.

TYPES OF BLU-RAY DISCS

A single-layer Blu-ray disc, which is roughly the same size as a DVD, can hold up to 27 GB of data — that’s more than two hours of high-definition video or about 13 hours of standard video.

A double-layer Blu-ray disc can store up to 50 GB, enough to hold about 4.5 hours of high-definition video or more than 20 hours of standard video.

WHY BLU-RAY?

Image quality: Superior resolution is a big part of what makes Blu-ray look great. The technical difference is that Blu-ray’s maximum resolution is 1,920×1,080 (1080p), while DVD is limited to 720×480 (480p). Beyond resolution, Blu-ray also uses better video-compression methods, resulting in more contrast and richer colors. It’s the highest-quality video format available today.

Audio quality: Audio quality is also improved. New high-resolution soundtrack formats, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, are essentially identical to the studio master.

Special features: The most basic innovation is the pop-up menu, which allows you to access the menu functions while the movie continues playing. It also allows us to perform picture-in-picture video commentary and has the ability to download new content from your Blu-ray player.

WHY THE NAME BLU-RAY ?

While current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM rely on a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray.

SOME DISADVANTAGES OF BLU-RAY:
1)Cost: Generally blu-ray discs are very much costly as compared to ordinary discs.

2)Limited Collection: Very few collections are available in blu-ray at present so HD lovers have to wait a little more

3)Load times: Sometimes the discs take a lot pf time to load.

4)Portability: Blu-ray discs wont work in ordinary DVD players which makes its use limited.
